A car crash near Wentfield Saturday night left Francis Mallick 20 of North East dead at Brooks Memorial Hospital. Evelyn Bennett, daughter of Fred Bennett of Corry, and Vera Dulwk of Bradford were seriously injured but survived after the vehicle overturned and was struck by an interurban trolley. Mallick was trapped under the steering wheel. rescuers freed him as the trolley collided with the wreck. The injured were treated by Dr. Van Laughlin in Westfield and later moved to friends’ homes. Miss Bennett had been living with her mother in Brocton.
Largely attended Children’s Day programs were held at three city churches with sacred concert at First Presbyterian Church and first Holy Communion ceremonies at St. Elizabeth’s and St. Thomas Catholic churches. Choir director Mrs Dewey led the fine concert, with Max Harvey, Charles Burkhardt, and Keppel Titany among soloists. Howard Roberts visited Clymer for relatives.
Two youths perished when a boat overturned in the flooded Shenango River at Sharon. Marco Clarich, 21, and Anthony Novosel, 13, drowned after leaping to aid younger brother John, 14, and companion George Roman, 14, who escaped by clinging to the boat.
Reports from Shanghai on June 11 indicate General Chang Tsung Chang demanded 1.9 million dollars for a peaceful surrender of Tien Tsin to Nationalist forces. Chang, still in control, has refused withdrawal terms and messages from Japanese forces urged his resignation or withdrawal from the Tien Tin area.
Washington June 11 President Coolidge prepares a quiet departure for the summer White House on a Wisconsin island. A large entourage sails with more than 70 pardons and the biggest clerical staff to accompany him. The special train will have no layovers except for essential stops. The president and Mrs. Coolidge will stay at the bungalow lodge of Henry Clay Pierce on the Brule River, midweek, with radio and telecommunication able to keep him in touch with events. He is not expected to return until mid September.
Navigator Harry W. Lyon and Radio Operator James Werner, key U.S. crew of the Southern Cross, plan to depart Australia soon and return home. Lyon and Werner spoke of their gratitude for the Australian welcome while noting their strong contributions to the nonstop flight from California to Australia.
Rev. C Wesley Adams leads Pennsylvania delegation of about four hundred Kiwanis members from 109 clubs as they travel to Seattle to attend the 12th annual convention. Homer H Swaney, Beaver Falls, presides over the state group while Kiwanis International President Henry C Heinz urges reflection on past achievements and future duties. An estimated 6000 attendees are expected from Monday to Thursday with several ceremonies and speeches planned.
Three men were killed aboard the U S Bruce, a destroyer, at the Norfolk Navy Yard when a gasket blew from the engine in the first rope. The victims were H Munden of Norfolk Charlen H Bryan of Norfolk and H Joyce of Portsmouth. The ship sustained no damage and an investigation was ordered by the Norfolk Navy Yard commandant.
Erie Infants Home fund raising saw heavy Saturday drizzle hampering street canvassing. City tally reported about $3,000 with county total expected near $4,000 as Mrs. Craig Devine led volunteers. Sealed boxes collected money citywide but final Erie figure unavailable by press time.
Police arrested a man who claimed the name Frank Williams and Erie address after breaking into a barn on West Washington Street and taking carpet remnants. Hall, the homeowner, did not press charges. Williams was freed by Police Magistrate Porterson with a pledge to leave the city. Another prisoner claimed the man was Raleigh Hess, a former Jamestown junk dealer.
Deniel Murphy, 28, was killed in Pleasant Mountain Township after stepping too close to the propeller of an airplane he had just completed a 15 minute flight in as a passenger. The incident occurred yesterday and is under investigation.
An Erie man was injured but not seriously in a Sunday morning car accident on Columbus Avenue near Edward St Pierre’s home. The car hit street holes, overturned, with a badly cut hand requiring stitches. the driver’s name was not learned.
In Pittsburgh on June 11 Deputy U S Marshals served warrants on 167 persons indicted by a federal grand jury for alleged prohibition violations. Bonds total about 835000 with amounts from 5000 to 10000 per person as plans begin for special terms to speed trials. John D Myer says 8 special terms may be held, while 2 are sought to speed work. John Bennington says a special term is needed to try the cases.
Washington May 11 Justice Biddons denied the motion of Robert W. Stewart Indiana Standard Oil Company's chaseman for a directed verdict of acquittal in his Senate counterfeit attempt trial.
Radio operator Blagi reports the Italia crew split into three drifting groups near Kings Bay Splixbergen. One group led by General Umberto Nobile includes seven men and two injured. another group 18.75 miles east. a third of three men without food or clothing remains missing. Rescue pleas flood back as two wounded members are found near Brandy Bay.
Rex Theatre will host amateur nights on June 21 and 22 at West South street venue. Local talent from Corry and nearby areas compete during regular movie shows with awards for top performances. Manager Shamburg invites all city amateurs to participate. visitors from Erie area also noted.
