Students urged to seek both state and federal aid

Rep Forest Hopkins urged students in north East to file for BEOG federal aid before the July 1 deadline to keep PHEAA money. He noted PHEAA awards often followed BEOG filings and automatic BEOG forms accompany PHEAA grants. Students from low income families should seek both funds to meet rising tuition costs and apply to the BEOG program via Washington, D.C. address.

Erie County faces potential liability over swine flu shots

Erie County Health Department officials briefed county chiefs on possible lawsuits stemming from adverse reactions to swine flu immunizations. Solicitor Donald Greishober said the county could be liable, while Acting Health Director John Toth noted doctors and nurses are immune to suit when volunteering, health departments are not. Immunization programs start late July or August for residents six and older, with a subsequent fall phase for others and numerous vaccination sites planned across the county.
