Colleges Fear Baseball Draft Will Mushroom
CHICAGO AP In the wake of MLB expansion to 24 teams a Big Ten spokesman called for extending antidraft safeguards used in college football and basketball to baseball. The majors draft protects players until graduation or 21st birthday, unlike football and basketball. Kay Schultz of the Big Ten Service Bureau cited losses of standout players and a shift of talent to pro teams. He noted three major league teams will stock the talent pool, relying on hundreds of college clubs. The Rams and Beban reportedly sought about 250000 dollars in contract terms months earlier, and one player hinted at joining Canadian pro play if terms failed.
