Survivors from submarine attacks are being landed as the navy hunts raiders. Eleven vessels are known lost, with a large Atlantic liner overdue. Germany plans a broad blockade of the American coast using a vast submarine fleet.
A Lewes bulletin reports heavy firing offshore near Cape Helopen amid believed naval battles with submarines that attacked the American tanker. Survivors from the Carolina landed at Lewes and Barnegat as reports tally eleven ships sunk near the coast. Navy destroyers and planes circulate the area from Fire Island to south Jersey in search for survivors and submarines.
French War Office reports American and French troops halting a German crossing of the Marne near Dormans and Chateau Thierry. American units counterattacked, recaptured positions, and burned the bridge, taking prisoners as part of the Marne battle. Night and morning communiques note heavy fighting, artillery action, and casualties among U.S. and Allied forces.
The City Commission met last evening with all members and Mayor Alexander present. Minutes approved and current bills authorized for payment. City Treasurer reported a May balance of 20 42 59 in the treasury on June 1, the largest for years. Funds transferred and bids for fire department boats rejected. A half holiday on Wednesdays in July and August was approved, and residents urged to report street light issues by phone.
The Inspectors of the Signal Corps at the Handard Turnbuckle Company plant enjoyed a dinner at the Phoenis Hotel at 8 o'clock with seventeen couples present. A lavish menu accompanied the event, one of the latest held at the local hotel. After dinner, the party moved to P. Hall for dancing, decorated in Signal Corps colors. Collin's Orchestra of 01 City provided music, with guests from out of town including Miss Light Toledo Miss Platt Miss Lutehart Buffalo Miss Barnes Columbia Miss Sherwood and Miss Kn Untori City.
City carriers of the Post Office force held a private wine and roast at the home of Frank Whiteley. The event honored Albert Caniburg who soon leaves for service with the United States Dietines. About twelve were present and the gathering was enjoyed.
Rochester orator Howard delivered a strong wartime appeal at the First M E Church in Clinton Minnesota drawing a large audience. He urged prosecution of the war, praised Belgian bravery, warned of German threats, and urged unity beyond party lines to win the war. He linked submarines to home shores and criticized Pro Germanism while noting the Brewers Association internment incident and omitting President Wilson.
Friends of Lulle Spencer Robinson and Byron Penner Han Hitt announce their marriage in St. Louis on Sunday June 1. Robinson’s attorney Babbitt is prominent in St. Louis society and Gerryman, a Corny High School alumnus, has spent summers with his brother T Babbitt and many friends here.
Enthusiasm marked the annual meeting of the Corry Board of Commerce and Industry as new directors were elected and a War Activities Committee formed to coordinate war fund campaigns. A membership drive was proposed with plans to run a citywide effort led by business leaders, aiming to boost support for the organization and related war efforts.
