German Submarines Sink Fifteen American Ships Near Coast

Navy Dept confirms reports of destruction of several ships near the Atlantic coast. Eleven survivors land from Edwin Cole, first ship sunk at 4 P M Sunday. Maritime Exchange lists fifteen American vessels reported destroyed. ports closed and ships held within.

German U boats Off Atlantic Coast Reported Active

Washington reports official confirmation that German U boats are operating off the Atlantic coast with numerous Allied ships sunk. Captured submarine unconfirmed at 3 pm. Boston and other ports closed to traffic as U boat chasers patrol. Survivors from the Cole and Haskell landed. Bristol and other vessels report attacks near Jersey coast and Nantucket Shoals.

Big Passenger Liner Carolina Shelled Off Jersey Coast

A United Press report from New York says the big passenger steamer Carolina of the New York and Porto Rico line, carrying two hundred fifty passengers from San Juan, was shelled by a German submarine off the Jersey coast. The vessel is believed to have gone off the Jersey Highlands, with passengers taking to lifeboats and adrift awaiting rescue as U-boats of a larger super cruiser type operate nearby. Navy reports indicate six to eight submarines in the area.

Veteran Railroader Died Today at Yadldent Residence

A veteran railroad worker Ayeuerick Landerath of Pontuylyauin Railroad died early today at his Yadldent home in the Raymond block. He had forty three years service with the WW and Millewid Witexburh divisions. Survived by wife and two, the funeral planned for tomorrow with arrangements pending.
