Workmen unsealed a cornerstone box dated 1899 in Corry revealing papers and six newspapers in good condition. Mayor Kinsey released contents noting one document listing pupil signatures from 1399 and that The Corry Journal The Flyer The Daily Leader The Weekly Herald The Corry Telegraph and the Plain Dealer were preserved.
Corry area campaign chairman Robert Bracken urges urgent support for the Corry Area Industrial Development Fund. With 15 days left to raise 125000, nine local companies have pledged almost 30000 in gifts ranging from 1000 to 12000. Pledges may be paid over three years and are tax deductible as a business expense. The drive ends June 17 and a breakfast report is planned in Hotel Corry at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev proposed abolishing the means of delivering nuclear weapons at the start of any disarmament plan. U S officials in Washington study the plan amid East West deadlock and concerns over Geneva talks on nuclear test bans.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev urged disarmament by abolishing all nuclear weapon carriers and liquidating overseas bases. He said host nations would be attacked first if war occurs and proposed open skies aerial surveillance after disarmament. He blamed U S actions for wrecking the Paris summit and distributed the plan to UN delegates.
Washington dispatch notes Khrushchev’s charge that the United States refuses to seek better Soviet ties. Republicans may gain politically as Democrats push back against Khrushchev’s assertion that a different U.S. government might handle Moscow better. John A. Reed 37 of 512 Lake Street jailed after a crash on Mead Avenue left his car in a drainage ditch. Police reported Reed appeared intoxicated with a blood alcohol 0.31 after the 12:30 am incident near the Polish Club. Reed, previously convicted in 1958 for driving under license suspension, faces hearing while his son Richard, 17, has past driving citations.
Broadway shuts down for the first time in 41 years as actors and producers clash over pensions and wages. Equity calls it a lockout. the league cites pay demands. About 1,000 actors and 3,000 crewfolk lose work while negotiations stall and a city fact-finding proposal is rejected. The Broadway showhouses are silent while road shows and off Broadway venues are unaffected.
A Bear Lake area man escaped serious injury when his car rose on a railroad crossing and plunged back to the pavement. James Beck of Bear Lake was taken to Corry Memorial Hospital by Bracken Ambulance for observation after his vehicle rode off the ground and threw him forward against the gear shift. No serious injuries were reported despite the unusual accident on Route 957 west of Louisville.
John W. Bryner of Bradford was elected to the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Association at the annual meeting. Fifty-eight other board members were reelected.
Four youths from Waco Texas aged 15 to 18 drowned while wading near a waterfall at a Bosque River site about 42 miles northeast of Valley Mills. Kenneth Spoonts 18 his wife Juanita 17 Joyce 16 and Lula Spredley 15 slipped over the falls as they inspected a potential August reunion location. The swift 14 inch deep pool hid the danger as current carved a deep pool below the falls and the bodies were recovered downstream.
