Desegregation Costs and Federal School Aid Debated
The Senate Education Subcommittee reviewed three federal aid bills on May 25 amid concerns desegregation will raise South schooling costs. One bill by Sen Cooper would fund 100 million annually for three years, while HEW opposes immediate aid pending conferences. The House programs create a national advisory committee, a 1955 White House education conference, and research contracting powers. A national facilities survey cites 912,000 needed classrooms and a 10.6 billion cost, with the South facing additional costs to move from dual to single systems.
