British warships shell the Italian mainland as American forces push through Sicily. Allied troops drive toward Catania with the city’s fall anticipated amid heavy air and sea operations in the Solomons and surrounding theaters.
Washington July 2 The United Mine Workers and Illinois coal operators offer a 48 hour week and a wage rise about $3 a day for 25 000 union workers as a possible step toward a final coal wage agreement. The deal awaits War Labor Board approval and OPA authority to raise coal prices to offset higher costs. Hearings likely to determine how the $1 26 daily portal to portal pay was reached, with UMW President John J Lewis likely to be required to testify.
Washington reports a September 9 start for a 15 billion dollar war loan drive aimed at mobilizing the public through war bonds. Treasury Secretary Morenthau noted a possible December follow up. drives rely on individual, corporate, and nonbank sources, with door to door salesmen expanding participation.
The Buy a Fighter Bond campaign committee announced at noon today that total sales stood at 141,875 dollars. Early and late afternoon sales have kept the drive on track and the city hopes to exceed 150,000 dollars soon with about 18,000 dollars left to reach the goal.
Leo Frederick Nichols of Grand Rapids Michigan will become superintendent of Corry Memorial Hospital Wellsville on September 1 at an annual salary of 2820. He will relocate from Butterworth Hospital Grand Rapids where he serves as executive assistant and purchasing agent. Nichols a graduate of Albion College and long hospital administrator in Michigan comes from a medical family.
The War Department announced plans to build new internment camps and enlarge existing ones to move Axis prisoners captured in North Africa into the United States as quickly as possible. Currently 65,058 Axis prisoners are interned in camps with capacity 136,163, including 45,355 Germans 19,642 Italians and 2,? Japanese.
Prominent Corry citizen and former manufacturer D Warren DeRosay died after a long illness. He came to Corry in 1908 to help organize the Corry Brick and Tile Company, later serving as general manager and officer. Survived by wife Gertrude Warnshouse and two sons Paul and Kingsley, funeral set for Home Byzoray with burial at Pine Grove Cemetery.
Seven soldiers pleaded guilty to abducting an Atlantic City evangelist after escaping a guardhouse in New Jersey. They were sent back to Gloucester County prison in default bail of 25,000 each, awaiting sentencing by September 1 before U. S. District Judge John Boyd Avila.
Three Corry residents were injured in a crash at 11:30 am on Wednesday at Routes 89 and Edinboro. James Pole, the driver, sustained a possible skull fracture and other injuries. Mrs. Edrra Folck, his mother, had back neck and leg injuries. Linda Lou Folck, 8, suffered burns and cuts. Ross Baier, 20, had a possible dislocated elbow and leg and arm injuries. Only Pole was detained at St. Vincent's Hospital. The Folck truck was struck by Baier’s truck, pushing both into a parked vehicle.
Bulletin reports describe pre dawn American infantry assault near Castelvetrane Sicily capturing the town and its strategic airport as Patton’s forces press the invasion with rapid advances against Italian defenses. Other items note freed prisoners returning to Martinique and broad wartime disruptions in Los Angeles transit.
Two children were treated at Corry hospital on Wednesday after a dog bite near their home. Richard Bemis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lowia Bemis, received a laceration to the right cheek and was discharged after treatment. Norma Perrin, one year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Perrin, RD 1 Columbus, ingested Deano and responded quickly to care and was released.
Philadelphia July 22 Dr Ralph Cooper Hutchison Pennsylvania's director of civilian defense reports a terrible slump in the fighting spirit of people at home though he finds no reason for optimism given the war ongoing. He cautions against complacency and urges renewed resolve.
Robert Grice of the Marines, on furlough, recalls more than four months as a machine gunner on Guadalcanal with the original landing force. He was wounded once and malaria struck him eighteen times in twelve months in the Southwest Pacific. He returns home to Corry with stories of the brutal early island fighting, praising Japanese fighters as well trained and fanatical, and noting the heavy but lighter casualty counts compared to Japanese. Grice trained at Parris Island and served with the original landing force on Guadalcanal.
Allied forces push along the Italian front as German and Italian columns retreat. British naval pressure reduces Axis coastal defenses and the shore-bound Italian fleet fails to meet the challenge, signaling a broad retreat toward Messina as U. S. troops advance inland.
British and American forces drive toward Catania as Axis defenses crumble along the Sicilian coast. Reports say Castelvetrano airport seized and Enna falling, with Patton’s 7th Army advancing toward Messina while Catania fights to hold the corridor to the northeast.
London reports July 22 that Soviet forces surged near Orel 200 miles south of Moscow as mass German reinforcements counterattacked in vain. Soviet dispatches claim Red Army advances of four to nine miles, overrun of 90 villages, and 960 Germans killed in recent actions. Berlin acknowledged Russian gains but put prisoner numbers much lower.
