Explosives Unloaded Earlier 11 Perish As Ships Crash In Thick Fog

In thick fog off Long Beach California the destroyer Collett and the Ammen collided. Eleven Navy sailors aboard the Ammen died, at least 20 were injured, six hospitalized. The Ammen had just unloaded explosives and was en route to mothball berth. The Collett sustained bow damage and aided survivors as rescue boats and a helicopter moved wounded to shore and a hospital ship.

Sobbing Carole Dragged To Jail In Second Murder Trial

Carole Tregoff, 23, was dragged back to the county jail in handcuffs after refusing to come to court for the second trial of her and Dr. R Bernard Finch on charges of murdering Finch's wife. Bail for both remained denied as jurors and alternates were being selected.

State Police Probe Area Crash Near Titusville

State Police continue investigation of a Route 89 two mile north of Titusville crash at 6 30 PM. Robert Guntrum of Ellwood City Pa was southbound when his car sideswiped another vehicle driven by Gale Ruth of Oil City. Ruth could not be reached for a statement. Damage to Guntrum’s car estimated at $200 with no injuries reported.

Grain Elevator Burns Traps Men. Rescue Ends Horror

In Brownfield Texas a grain elevator explosion left three dead and one missing. A gravely injured man, clinging to a window bed, was rescued after two hours by a helicopter lowering a cradle. Fire officials blamed grain dust explosions for the disaster.

Fire Hits Erie Farm Damages Estimated at 55000

An early morning lightning strike touched two silo attached to the barn on the Charles H. Hinkler farm nine miles south of Erie. The blaze destroyed the barn, equipment, grain and hay totaling about 55000 dollars. Fourteen dairy cows were saved by firefighters. Chief Arthur Fuller of Kuh Hose Co. estimated the loss and noted partial insurance coverage.

Local Motorist Hospitalized In Auto Crash

A Corry motorist Raymond Wiggers, 48, is in satisfactory condition at Corry Memorial Hospital with chest contusions facial and body lacerations and possible fractured ribs after a Route 6 collision four miles west of Corry. Debra Devine age 6 and her mother Austin Devine 33 also injured and admitted. Debra later transferred to Hamet Hospital Erie. Police say Devine passed a truck then skidded broadside into Wiggers vehicle during a heavy rain storm. about $2,000 damage to Devine car and $300 to Wiggers car. shots pending in investigation.

Two jets crash at Shaw AFB killing four

Two RF101 jets crash shortly after predawn takeoff at Shaw AFB on a night refueling mission. Four people die including an elderly farm couple in a farmhouse and the two pilots Lt. Roger N. Siegel and Capt. Clarence A. Toeppke. The cause is unknown.

Escape from Crawford Jail Two Prisoners At Large

Crawford County detectives and Meadville police continued their search yesterday for two prisoners who escaped from the county prison farm near Meadville. Charles Prewatt of Titusville and Forrest Cote of Connellsville walked off the farm Monday afternoon while picking berries. Prewatt was serving a term for larceny of a motor vehicle. Cote had been convicted on a charge of non support of his family.

Eisenhower reports 1.1 billion dollar budget surplus
