Russians Name New Chief for East Germany
Berlin reports the sudden replacement of Soviet High Commissioner Vladimir Bemyenov by diplomat Georg Pushkin fueling speculation on a shift in Soviet strategy toward East Germany. Western observers note Pushkin's readiness to use force if needed, contrasting with the gentler approach attributed to his predecessor. In Pittsburgh, five year old Michael Welsh drowned in the Monongahela River while wading with his brother. The brothers’ uncle, summoned after the incident, helped recover the body.
