Fossil Said To Be Millions Of Years Old Found In Sykesville
A renailized specimen of a serpentine fossil was found at the Cascade shaft of the B and S Coal Co in Sykesville by R G Bruce and Guy Slimmer while removing roof slate. The six inch wide, one inch thick and 28 inch long fossil resembles a scaly serpent and is considered well preserved for its age. Its interior suggests petrified remains of a prehistoric snake and local talks tie it to the Mississippian to Permian periods dating about 150 million years ago.
