Wickersham urges federal role to curb bootlegging and reform Volstead Act
In Easton Point Conn on July 16 Governor Roosevelt and others heard a letter from George W. Wickersham head of Hoover’s law enforcement commission. He urged governors to support modifying the Volstead Act to entrust federal control of importation manufacture and interstate shipment of intoxicants while leaving states to police saloons and speakeasies. He argued this would make enforcement feasible and strike a blow at bootlegging. Roosevelt read the letter, noting it applied to New York Massachusetts Rhode Island and the western states, and called for a permanent governors’ committee to serve as a crime statistics clearing house amid fears federal action is needed to curb rampant crime.

Burns Fatal to Fourth Ward Child Velotti Four
Four year old Hite Rose Velotti daughter of Mr and Mrs Verretti died at Corry hospital after her clothing caught fire from newspaper used as a torch while she played with matches at home on Weal Pleasant street. She suffered extensive burns over her arms legs body and head and died at 10 30 this morning. She is survived by her parents four sisters and one brother. Funeral arrangements not yet complete.

One Killed as Speeding P. R. R. Flier Derails
United Press reports a Pittsburgher train of the Pennsylvania Railroad derailed after striking three freight cars at Derry Pa. Engineer Ben B. Evans, 55, died from boiler blast and scalding while fireman H. B. Keiser, 40, was injured. At least 78 passengers were shaken as the locomotive overturned and cars toppled. Passengers were transferred to the Manhattan Limited No. 22 for continuing trips to New York.

United Press reports a Polish air force Major Loula Idatkowski died in a crash near Santa Grula on Graciosa Island while the Marshal Pilsudski attempted an emergency landing from Paris to the United States. Co pilot Casimer Kubala was rescued minutes before the plane exploded, saving him from a fatal fate.
