Three Marine Corps prisoners from Indiana Mahoning County and Oklahoma escaped transport to face court martial. Officials warn layoffs could swell to 200000 including related industries if the stoppage lasts weeks. David J. McDonald appeared at Morrisville urging unity as workers cheered and predicted a strong bargaining position for a renewed contract.
The sixth major postwar steel strike cripples production as 500000 workers walk out after stalled contracts. PRR says layoffs possible and 20 percent freight loss is expected. The Bard of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce discussed a damage repair plan at a noon meeting with seven members. They will address the Gannon College attitude survey findings at the August full-board session and map steps to counter allegations by local business and professional people. The group approved the survey bill and outlined Centennial parade plans in Titusville.
Sullen convicts ended a 32 hour sit down at Brushy Mountain Prison in Tennessee after surrendering Tuesday. Pat Patterson, corrections official, stayed overnight to hear grievances while demanding release of three captive foremen and continued ultimatum talks. Eight ring leaders were moved to Nashville for security. rest were housed at Brushy Mountain. The uprising began Monday with 200 sticks of dynamite used by the inmates demanding higher pay better food mail handling and other changes.
Harrisburg AP The House Democratic leadership pressed for a vote today on a compromise plan to raise the sales tax to 4 percent and broaden its scope. Democrats admit about 25 votes short to pass without GOP help as Republicans signal limited support. The package, drafted to replace the governor’s plan, would tax liquor store sales, beer distributors, laundry and garment repair, dry cleaning, and soft drinks, with revenue estimates of 76.5 million plus. Governor says he will back any plan not unjust, but has not committed to this package. Continued on Page Two.
Ajax plans to rehire 12 or 13 furloughed workers and hire skilled operators on the second shift in its machine shop as demand grows. The compressor and field equipment sales boost is driving payroll expansion, with state employment screening to aid hiring. Company officials expect no steel strike impact despite prior industry concerns.
Fire chief Jack Downey reported sightseers blocking Wright street hindered access to two blazes. At 10 46 PM a wax fire at 649 Wright street burned surfaces and caused 150 dollars damage while Mrs Meerdink suffered minor burns. Earlier a gas-tank leak explosion on West Main street caused heavy smoke and injuries to a neighbor.
Bloodmobile’s visit to Corry yielded only 51 pints out of a 128 pint quota. James S. George, county chairman, reported 23 donors participated with nine no-shows. three were rejected and 31 walked in. Total collected across Cort sites reaches 3748 pints this season despite vacation closures.
A bus carrying about 90 mountain day campers lost brakes and lurched through a residential Arcadia street. A 3 year old girl Corrine Matson was thrown and killed. Two adults in cars were injured. Bus driver Brady Bolt said there was no horn, air, or brakes. Several campers suffered injuries though many escaped serious harm.
Former Corry resident James H Kirch, living in Jamestown, faces a Monday hearing on charges of providing false information to obtain unemployment benefits. A Pennsylvania State Employment Service audit uncovered the falsifications. Kirch posted a $300 property bond and awaits the hearing after a May incident period.
