Polio cases drop in first half says state official

State health officials report only one polio case in the first six months, the best six month total on record though experts caution it is too early to predict annual totals. Dr Charles L Wilbur notes that most cases occur in late summer and autumn while Dr W D Schrack Jr cites ongoing vaccine distributions and ongoing gaps in immunization among certain age groups as a concern. Since 1955 Pennsylvania has received 13 million doses of Salk vaccine, enough for over four million full immunizations, with about seven million residents yet unprotected. The state plans to receive 9 000 vaccine doses monthly through next July as federal aid tapers. The state has not allocated its own funds for vaccine purchases.
