Showers end heat wave aiding crops as rains bring relief to dry farms. Forecasters predict more showers then fair weather Thursday, with clear skies and rising temperatures expected to continue across western Pennsylvania. Farmers hail the rainfall as salvation amid a dangerous dry spell threatening bumper harvests.
Dr Scott, a well known former Corry resident, is named to lead the bureau of restoration of the welfare department. The report notes his prior service in Pittsburgh during the first Pinchot administration and later roles, with other state personnel changes announced from Harrisburg including dismissals in the revenue department and the Workmen’s Insurance and Labor bureaus.
Berlin officials announced Germany would honor the Hoover plan and abstain from reparations payments. The one month unconditional payment of 51,000,000 marks due today would not be made, while Britain and Italy had declared renunciation of unconditional payments. France said it did not expect payment, Belgium remained silent. The question of continuing in kind deliveries and railway bonds to international banks would go to the experts conference in London.
Detroit auditors found the Public Welfare Department spent millions on unemployment relief while the city neared bankruptcy. The report cites purchases of cosmetics, silk stockings, and other luxuries for the unemployed. City officials face charges as the audit blames incompetence and insufficient funding from the city council.
Westbrook Maine July 15 Rudy Vallee's invalid mother Mrs Katherine L Vallee 61 died today with her son at her bedside after a three year battle with heart disease high blood pressure and complications. Rudy who married Fay Webb actress last week flew from New York with his brother William to comfort her during her final hours.
A 140 foot steam yacht named Wanderlust ran ashore two miles south of Race Point after mistaking a headlight for the wood end light. Owned by John Tilton of Miami and chartered by Mr and Mrs Edward Green of New York, the vessel was in the care of Capt Edward Doyle with six crew members aboard. The accident happened in thick fog and the yacht was hoped to be floated at high water around noon.
Philadelphia suffered a severe storm with 57 mph winds causing million dollar property damage across the city and surrounding areas. One man, Tyans Young, 30, was killed by electrocution in a basement. two others were reported missing, feared drowned in the Schuylkill river. The Broad Street subway flooded, Market Street Bridge work halted, and dozens of streets and cellars flooded as boats broke from moorings and debris cluttered streets.
Across the United States pajama wear has moved from nightwear to daytime attire. A nationwide survey reports women wearing sleepwear in public places, including streets and stores, with hospitals in Lewistown, Montana, the sole exception where visitors are restrained.
In a Rome interview Mussolini says American presence at the 1932 disarmament conference is the strongest guarantee of its success and criticizes Hoover moratorium as not the final solution. Dan Ullom of Waynesburg 20 member of Company I 110th Infantry was injured while tripping during drill at the Pennsylvania National Guard encampment in Mt Gretna. A glass splinter shattered his eyeglasses and threatened his left eye. He was taken to Lebanon Hospital for treatment to save the eye.
In a bold bid, George Baldres and Alexander Magyar, both Hungarians, departed from Warrior Grace aiming to fly to Budapest. Troy July 15 Jack Legs Diamond a notorious gangster known for racketeering was acquitted by a Rensselaer County jury after a one day trial. The jury accepted the defense’s account placing Diamond in an Albany hotel on the nights of April 15 and 16, discounting the claim that he kidnapped and tortured Grover Parks. Diamond is released on $50,000 bail until September 15 with four indictments still pending in the Parks case.
London July 15 in the House of Commons an exchange halted proceedings as High Dalton the foreign under secretary refused to answer Conservative MP Edward Mar poribanks on whether government policy supported France's demands for political guarantees amid talks with Germany. Dalton said comments would be premature.
In a Tamqua area camp near here six men died and others were reported dying from alcohol poisoning after consuming a diluted “mediator” alcohol. Patrick Flavin of McAdoo, about 50, was in critical condition at Coaldale hospital. Victims included Norman Delzett of Tamigila and John Cashman of Shamokin, with Thomas Davis of Nesquehoning and Alfred Morton of Centralia among the unconscious. Police planned to search the camp for more victims as the death toll rose.
Senator Jamies Davis told the Pennsylvania Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen in Hershey Park that railroads will weather the downturn and return to prosperity. He cited industry optimism, potential mergers, and steps by larger systems to compete with buses and trucks, while noting temporary economic strain. Frank M. Cole returned home from a Buffalo business trip.
Washington July 15 The nations railroads opened hearings at the Interstate Commerce Commission on a proposed 15 percent general freight rate rise. Dr Julius H Parmelee outlined strained finances, declining returns, and rising costs despite economy efforts as about 500 listeners crowded the room. The railroads adjusted their petition to exclude coal and coke from the increase while seeking to preserve existing charges for those commodities.
County commissioners named two hundred eighteen registration officials for Pall primaries. Both parties listed local registrars by ward and precinct, including LeRoy Cady and Chald Stewart in First Precinct, First Ward, Frank J. Lillie and Harriett Durham in Second, and Mary Ellis and James Sullivan in Third Ward. Further appointments were expected to be completed later today.
