A 12 year old boy, Greg Smith of Union City, drowned after floating in an inner tube on French Creek near Red Bridge. He was reported missing at 5 10 p m yesterday as a county search and rescue helicopter and ground crews searched Union City. Witnesses heard calls for help and an inner tube was later found near Route 97 behind Cross Construction Co. Police note inner tubes are common in the creek but prohibited by the city. The search continued as officials said the boy may not have known to swim and the incident is under investigation.

Searchers comb Oil Creek near Centerville for Robert W. Anthony 24 who disappeared while bringing in cows for milking. His wife and employer found no trace after a 6:30 p m departure. Centerville fire department Rescue Squad dogs and divers scoured the area until night. Anthony’s shirt was recovered but no other signs emerged and crews planned to resume the search today.
Washington reports North Korea fired on an American Chinook, killing three crewmen and capturing one after the helicopter allegedly strayed into North Korean airspace during a construction materials mission. President Carter urged restraint and sought immediate Panmunjom talks.
PennDOT officials will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the See Ee ie Gates to announce cuts in the maintenance budget for the upcoming fiscal year and explain which programs will be shaved, with regional official Jack Baker noting efforts to move the meeting up if possible.
