Edward Hovey of Erie and his brother Harold of Union City were nabbed while watching a ball game for allegedly stripping three Riverside tires from a car in Union City. A warrant led Union City officers to arrest them. two other youths were released. The Hoveys face larceny charges as investigators detailed the incident near West Main Street.
Three Erie men Brant Girardot Louis Kaufman and Henry Cornell were ordered held for the September term of Erie county court by Justice Walter E Goodwin on arson charges linked to fires in Crawford county and in Erie county. Defense moved for a writ of habeas corpus to free Kaufman and Girardot as arguments proceed en banc. Cornell remains jailed in Crawford county on bond default.
Mrs. Mike Dimmyer aged 47 slipped on hay at the top of Spring street while preparing to drive a team. She fell from the wagon with a broken back and was first taken to Dr G B Bennett’s office for examination, then to Hamot hospital for treatment.
A clothes press fire at 110 Brook Street caused about 2000 in damage before firefighters controlled the blaze. Mrs Edna Ross awakened from upstairs to safety as smoke and water damaged much of the upper floor and contents. Origin undetermined after investigation by Fire Chief Paulson.

United Press reports the Goodyear blimp Mayflower tore from moorings at Municipal airport in Kansas City. Explosion from the gasoline tank followed a windstorm forcing a landing, causing the blimp to crash into high tension wires and burst into flames. Pilot B. Brannigan of Akron was critically injured. Hobensack and Horton helped rescue others. Separate Chicago crash killed Chester Bailes and Warren, two veteran transport pilots, when a Lockheed Vega failed to climb from 500 feet.
Shester S Saltsman 40 and his wife were killed when their car overturned after a curve near Westfield on the Buffalo road. Coroner Crandall said Saltsman crossed the white line, struck truck caps, and the vehicle traveled hundreds of feet before overturning. Mrs Saltsman died instantly from a broken neck. he died shortly after rescue. A family history tale notes a prior fatal auto crash involving his mother and brother near Phoenix. The couple, noted for social prominence, were traveling from Buffalo, N C. to visit relatives when the accident occurred shortly before 1 AM.
The Interstate Commerce Commission will open hearings on a proposed 10 percent freight rate increase on Wednesday. The case, deemed highly significant, will be heard before a nine member board and scrutinizes railroad charges nationwide. In other news, a Corry youth recovering from injuries after a Wooster to Lake Chippewa crash, with family reports of recovery and small injuries.
Petition for a writ of habeas corpus to secure the release of Louis L. Katxtman coal estate operator and Frank Girardot insurance adjuster was made returnable on the first Monday of August 1981 at a hearing here today.
Three candidates announced for City Council today. Stanley H. Nichols, Corty High School graduate and local insurance broker, seeks both party nominations with petitions circulating. Charles M. Selsie, former City Council member under Patterson and Alexander, filed on both tickets and runs as a vigorous contender. An army ambulance plane racing from El Paso to Washington with Pirate Olaf Nelson aboard arrived at Levit field at 7:45 p.m. and refueled before continuing to Walter Reed hospital. Nelson had two false teeth lodged in his throat but was resting well after the perilous journey. Major Daniel Fransin of William Beaumont Hospital, accompanying him, reported no discomfort from the trip. The plane planned another stop at Weightfield, Dayton, Ohio, and was expected to reach Washington around 2:20 p.m.
In Philadelphia area a rough weekend left ten dead and over 40 injured as good weather drew crowds to roads. Jamiey Murray and family perished when a pole struck their car near Woodbury New Jersey. Cyril Goldbeck and Charles Cannon, both from Philadelphia, died after being hit by a car while attempting to help others near Lakehurst New Jersey. Four Philadelphia swimmers drowned: Isaac Grasa Joseph Glenn Anthony Landis and Denny Shields.
Two French aviators Le Brix and Dorel in the Dewoitine monoplane The Fiyiphen were sighted northeast of Moscow en route from Paris toward Tokyo in an effort to set a nonstop distance record. They aimed to reach Tokyo in about sixty hours, covering roughly 6200 miles. Soviet authorities urged full aid in case of forced landing.
