The Corry Area School District board endured a three and a half hour meeting with two executive sessions. They voted to reinstate the fifth assistant football coach despite opposition from James Bennett and Margaret Morrow, after coach Joe Sanford warned of resigning if denied. Sanford had expanded the varsity squad by 150 percent to 55 players, and the board approved the reinstatement, with four yes votes and two no votes recorded. The discussion also touched on the hiring of a school solicitor and debates over favoring graduates from Edinborn State College.
Police busted Kevin Stolz and William Pele as they allegedly burglarized Robert Churchs Country Foods late at night. Stolz fled with cash, while Pele carried marijuana and drugs later tied to a separate theft from Dr Harmon’s office. A 12 year old Pleasantville boy, Colin McCawley, is hospitalized in Titusville after his bike chain slipped causing loss of control and a crash into two parked cars in Pleasantville. Watergate figure G Gordon Liddy wins parole set to take effect September 7 after President Carter cuts his 20 year sentence. Liddy, at Allenwood prison, will have served 52 months by release date, his lawyer says he is glad to have a date though misses his family. The commutation left fines unresolved and counts toward the one third minimum of his eight year term. Other Watergate related notes mention urgent blood type needs as Red Cross reports two types required for local patients.
In Harrisburg AP reports the Shapp administration warns of tax hikes while House Majority Leader Manderino pushes a no tax plan. Revenue Secretary Milt Lopus warns cutting the Revenue Department risks $108 million in lost revenue and broader tax avoidance over time. Senate House talks aim for a week end compromise as budget and mass transit cuts loom.
Barbara Mack, director of parks and recreation, announced last minute plans for a Wednesday morning trip. A bus will leave Park Place and Center Street at 10 a.m. for Pittsburgh to tour the three rivers aboard the Gateway Clipper. Lunch and all transportation are free through a state funded program. parents may give spending money and snacks for the ride. The group aims to return to Corry around 6 to 6:30 p.m. in front of the hotel.
