Los Angeles AP Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson challenged rival Sen. John F. Kennedy to a debate before the Texas and Massachusetts delegations amid a bid to derail Kennedy’s momentum. Johnson suggested a 3 p.m. joint session on caucus and debate at a to be chosen venue.
In Los Angeles the Democratic convention readies a civil rights focused platform amid Southern opposition. Nine state delegates protest the rights declarations claiming they violate state constitutions while Georgia’s Charl? Bloch says no walkout is planned.
Pennsylvania House Speaker H G Andrews urged the state Democratic convention to back Senator John F Kennedy for vice president amid Kennedy’s presumed presidential bid. The 62 member delegation allotted 64 votes to Kennedy and split remaining votes among Symington Johnson Meyner and Stevenson with one vote to Lawrence.
Charles Williams, longtime office manager of Corry Jamestown Corp, is named assistant to the president by D Armour Hillstrom. He will oversee relations between Corry and Ohio Chair Co. Youngstown and will plan chair production needs and scheduling. He also handles design of a new office, contract letting, and moving pastimes to the 1962 building. Williams aids marketing heads in expanding dealer and customer relations in Corry.
Premier Nikita Khrushchev warned at a Kremlin news conference that resuming U2 spy flights over the Soviet Union would heat tensions to a boiling point and bring about war. He cited the RB-47 shootdown and claimed surviving crewmen admitted espionage aims along the northern frontier. He said the matter would go to the United Nations Security Council, then the General Assembly.
Congo Premier Moise Tshombe declared Katanga an independent state and sought military and economic aid from Belgium. He accused Patrice Lumumba of chaos while Belgium reportedly faced a U.S. role in backing Congo stability, with Ambassador Clare Timberlake transmitting the approach to Washington.

Corry School District ended the 1959 60 fiscal year with a $58 259 balance. Treasurer R Elwin Fuller presented the final report at a brief meeting at the high school. The district benefited from tax collections exceeding estimates and lower than expected expenditures. The board approved a $2 250 bid for transporting elementary students to Wright School. Transportation costs exceeded the budget by $500. The district will not be reimbursed by the state for transport, but maintains the program as a courtesy. The sinking fund balance was $402 as of June, with the improvement fund at $38 371.
Hein Muller, 68, longtime president of Longines Whitmayer Watch Co and 50 year company member, died yesterday at his Manhattan home. Born in Switzerland, he led the firm for 24 years.
The Corry Area Joint School Committee, in its July session at Corry Area High School, announced a 1959 60 year end cash balance of 31108 and began bids for transporting special education students. Low bid came from Mrs. Leon Proctor at 20.50 per day, with others from FP L Baressi, Corry Auto Auction, Union City Taxi Co and Corry City Cab Co.
Mayor J. Fred Kinley will join the auditor general’s office in Harrisburg, auditing state aided institutions including hospitals in the northwestern Pennsylvania territory. He will remain linked to the Kinley Dolan Insurance Agency and will decide later whether to resign as mayor, a term expiring in 1960.
The Corry city council plans to call for bids on repairs to Bask South Street from South Center to Mill and Mill from East South Street to East Main. A fuels tax increase to 2400 was authorized pending highway district approval and bid opening August 1 with district engineer approval required before start.
