A three-year-old boy from Ruffsdale named William Powell died after being struck by an automobile as he stepped from a curb near Mt Pleasant. The tragedy occurred July 12 and authorities investigated the roadside accident.
Associated Press dispatch from Tokyo reports Gen Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters alleging North Korean forces committed barbarities including murder of prisoners. The communique cites evidence and warns that leaders ordering or permitting such acts face death penalties under military tribunals. Capt. Ambrose J. Rhizen and Lt. J. Cox listed as missing or captured Americans linked to broadcasts.
Two Corry youths were fined ten dollars and costs each after pleading guilty to stealing a tire and wheel from a Plymouth coupe east of the city in Warren county. They were discharged in the custody of their parents. Two other youths, 16, were released to their parents for juvenile court. All four remain held for the next Erie county criminal court term on a burglary charge.
The Army announces fourteen weeks of basic training for draftees after which they will be posted within the United States. Some may later be sent overseas, but the number going abroad will not be large. Officials say the draft ceiling may be adjusted if needed, with a present Army strength of about 5.6 million.
Harrisburg reports Pennsylvania’s 1401 inductees form part of a national Korean War draft quota of 24 000. Col. Henry M. Gross announces the system will take about 48 days to enroll the draftees, with boards across 175 districts dividing the state share and notifying inductees within days after exams and processing.
A crash on Route 6 left Fred Johnson of New Haven cited for driving too fast for conditions after his car struck a parked truck owned by William Durham of Route 6. The 1947 vehicle sustained $300 damage while the truck suffered minor damage.
The Clymer Consolidated School District approved a budget of 1,063,000 P and kept the Hx millage at 1 percent. Deloss Rouse of French Creek was reelected to a five year term on the board, with Dr Lyle Compton presiding and Gilbert Ton elected chairman for the evening. Approximately 56 taxpayers attended the meeting which also approved a new school bus purchase.
A total of 525.84 will be turned over for Mead Park from Mead Park Day activities. Charles Bracken, fund starter, noted this morning. The event, sponsored by Abe Chanther of Commerce, raised 8002 through various civic groups and 40 additional smaller prizes donated by local merchants. A full list of contributors followed, with amounts: VFW Auxiliaries 19, American Legion Post 78, PTA Council 6, Kiwanis 40, Rotary 52, Women’s Civic Club 23, Pony Rides 6, Rod and Gun Club 120, Stanford Hose 501, Elks Club 23, Corry Chamber of Commerce 165.
Washington July 12 administrative leaders reportedly decided to set aside the 1.01 billion dollar excise tax slash bill, delaying action until there are clearer developments in the Korean war.
Local Barber Shop Singers plan a benefit show and may perform as a duet unless more members join. Rehearsals every fourth Friday at Aero Foremen’s Room West Male Street at 8 p.m. Open to all who wish to sing old songs. first and third Fridays welcome non organized quartet singers.
The Pennsylvania Telephone Corp. won a 462,456 dollar annual rate hike approved by the Public Utilities Commission in Harrisburg. The commission rejected a higher proposed increase, citing it would be excessive, and set revised operating revenues and depreciation figures. The move affects 3,500 Corry customers across multiple counties with July 1 effective dates and highlights a substantial construction plan to meet rising demand.
The Corry Memorial Hospital Association board met in a special session and moved to pursue immediate collection of pledges from two fund campaigns. About 71,000 remains unpaid of 402,000 total with 39,000 deemed possibly uncollectible as some donors moved away or declined to pay. The committee plans aggressive personal solicitations and reminders to raise the remaining 60,000 to 100,000 needed to complete the project, with about a third of costs borne by the secretary government.
Samuel Westfall an 18 year old of Titusville told State Police he was assaulted by Richard Proctor at the home of Vern Messenger Spring Creek. Westfall planned to press assault charges today. Walter Rankin of Sugar Grove RD1 was treated for a kicked mouth and chin laceration after a horse bite earlier evening and released from hospital.
A 59 year old dishwasher Dominick Omogrosso killed a hotel baker and night clerk at the Hotel Schenley in Pittsburgh. He shot John Harper and a night manager Herbert Hunde as patrons sheltered. A police lieutenant said Omogrosso confessed, claiming others caused him trouble. He faces homicide arraignment today. Also in WASHINGTON a Senate vote blocked action on the Full Employment Practices Commission bill with 55 to 33.
Associated Press dispatch from Tokyo reports heavy North Korean pressure near the Kum River area north of Taejon as American forces retreat to prepared lines. General MacArthur warns withdrawals may continue, with fighting around Chochiwon and Chong Ty and Umsong.
Washington July 12 There is no immediate prospect of several closed or transferred military hospitals being reopened for military use because of the Korban Situation. Dr Richard Meiling head of the defense department hospital program said the hospitals in use will not be reopened. He spoke at the Murphy General Hospital in Westhaven Miss Valley Forge General Howolla Phoenixville Pa and Percy Jones General Hospital Bajale Greek ey were closed June 2 30. Augusta Ga and Long Beach Calif have been transferred to the veterans administration. A spokesman for the defense department said the Army medical department does not anticipate any need to reopen the closed hospitals.
