Soustelle Named to French Cabinet Information Minister
De Gaulle appointed Jacques Soustelle to his cabinet as information minister, signaling a response to Algeria crisis. Soustelle had been the Algerian colonials' political brain behind the May 12 revolt that helped bring De Gaulle to power, and his omission had frustrated colonial leaders who hoped he would become resident sinister for Algeria to secure their influence and thwart Moslem rebels. De Gaulle acts as his own North Africa minister for now, with Gen. Raoul Salan on the ground.
