Egypt Delays Aid Funds as Nasser Plays Powers Against Each Other
The United States and Britain offered up to 70 million dollars in grants to Egypt for a hydroelectric irrigation project, with the World Bank pledging 200 million. Egypt delayed accepting, fueling speculation that Nasser stall tactics were used to leverage better terms against the United States and Soviet bloc. Egypt then increased trade with the Communist bloc, buying weapons on credit and backing Soviet policies including recognizing Communist China.
