Detroit July 1 plans for organizing Michigan auto workers moved ahead after Father Coughlin told a 5,000 strong rally at the Coliseum that a minimum average wage of 2,150 dollars could be secured. He announced a Labor Day meeting on Belle Isle to form a new union tied to the National Union for Social Justice.
London reports Capt Anthony Iden told the House of Commons that Britain proposed ceding a strip of Somaliland to Abyssinia to give access to the sea but Mussolini rejected the offer. Iden said Britain expressed grave concern over events and public opinion in Britain is strong on the issue for the league's future.
In Lake Charles Louisiana on July 1 a gun battle between about 800 members of rival longshoremen unions left nine wounded two critically. The clash disrupted harbor operations as authorities investigated possible fatalities and arrested several participants.

Detroit July 1 William Schweitzer, after hours of questioning, remained cool and unemotional as police labeled his three confessions to the Howard Carter Dickinson slaying as stupid and ridiculous during the third day of interrogation. Schweitzer, an underworld figure with several aliases, insisted on his innocence.

Washington July 1 A joint resolution by Sen Daniel O Hastings would adjourn Congress until November 18 except for the new tax bill and would require joint committees to study and report on the government budget and financial condition. Senate Minority Leader Charles McNary introduced the measure in Hastings absence and planned to seek debate the next day.

Harrisburg July 1 Milk Producers Association called for the reinstatement of Paul O Sunday of New Kingston as chairman of the state milk control board. They charged the governor acted irrationally in dropping Sunday and another board member. The two were dismissed by Governor Earle for accepting regular salaries before appointments were confirmed by the State Senate.
