Court Upholds Conviction of Communist Lawyer
In Washington the Court of Appeals by a 5 4 vote upheld the contempt of Congress conviction of Harry Sacher a New York defense attorney. Sacher refused to tell the Senate Internal Security subcommittee in April 1955 whether he was or had been a member of the Communist party or its lawyers section. He received six months in jail and a $1 000 fine. The Watkins ruling prompted new review. Judge Warren Burger rejected Sacher’s First Amendment challenges. The subcommittee investigated Harvey Matusow’s turnabout to see if Communist influence shaped the inquiry.

Educators Challenge Grand Jury Probe Validity in NYC
The New York City Board of Education said a special Brooklyn grand jury probe into school crime may be legally invalid. After a six hour closed meeting the board disputed the jury’s remit and defended staff and students from intimidation by teens, while noting prior statements by Superintendent Jensen and Board President Silver. The board suggested the grand jury’s actions could have influenced student safety and referenced the death of George Goldfarb, principal of John Marshall Junior High, amid recent rapes and assaults by a police officer and gym instructor.
