Short Officers In Vietnam
The Army reports a shortage of infantry officers in Vietnam since the 1960s buildup, especially lieutenants and captains, with retirements affected for infantry lieutenant colonels. Numbers are not released, but sources say about 700 lieutenant colonels are needed, while >670 majors and captains have died or left the field. The shortage seems confined to infantry, not artillery or armor, and is hoped to ease in the next fiscal year. Sri Maha Bodhi fence funds reach 133000 dollars as Buddhists donate for a gold fence in Sri Lanka.

Big Hooks Complete Job of PC Wreck Salvage
Railroad traffic through Titusville was halted for about eight hours to allow wreck crews using two big hooks and other gear to salvage five coal hoppers and trucks damaged in an early morning wreck on December 26. A southbound freight signaled the resumption of traffic at Hydetown. A Penn Central spokesman cited difficulty coordinating the two hooks, one near Elmira, N.Y., that had other work. The steam operated hook, dating to 1912, now uses diesel fuel. A slow order of 10 mph remained in place from five weeks earlier, with trains expected to crawl through Hydetown until warm weather allows track upgrades.
