Subzero temperatures dominate Corry and northwestern Pennsylvania as the mercury dips to twelve below zero, with readings falling overnight and lingering into the morning. After a brief rise, temperatures remained well below zero as forecasts warn of continued cold and dangerous wind chills through tonight and Tuesday.
United Press reports biting arctic winds across western Canada plunge the east into a record cold spell. Subzero temperatures persist for a sixth day in the Midwest with a blizzard brewing in the east. Deaths linked to the cold exceed 175 nationwide as frostbite treatments rise and schools delay reopenings in Corry and beyond.
An official notice confirms Italian air raids hit Red Cross unit No. 3 on January 18 near Ras Siyoum. unit led by Dr. Schuppler with Capt. Brophil as transport officer. The attack swamped by wartime injuries, with reports also naming bombings of abet and Amba Bircuta.
In Washington on January 27 Democratic House leaders dismissed Smiths anti New Deal remarks as reinforcing Roosevelts renomination. Pittsburg dated report says Luly Mc Pherson, a houseboat divester, is charged with the stabbing death of George Dedig after Tack O Hara confessed he beat Dedig with a railroad jack handle and poker. Coroner says Dedig, 51, was stabbed. Mc Pherson told police she tried to separate the men and did not mean to stab him.
State Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the six per cent corporation tax in the Turk Paint and Varnish Co case. Delaware corporation Turk Paint and Varnish Co v John B. Kelly, secretary of revenue, affirming the ruling in favor of the state. Costs of the suit were charged to the plaintiff.
In Harrisburg on January 21, the Pennsylvania Democratic state committee opened its 1936 campaign. It endorsed candidates for auditor general and state treasurer, named delegates at large to the national convention, and set plans for district delegates, presidential renomination support, and Roosevelt attendance. C. Earle and D. L. Lawrence will lead the delegation with endorsements for Warren R. Roberts and Clair Ross as top ticket choices.
Prison officials intercepted an end per plot at Western penitentiary prompting special surveillance. Harry Craig of Delaware County serving 20 to 40 years and Howard Davelman of Wayne County serving 10 to 20 years for robbery face disciplinary action to be decided at next week's Wastern Prison Board meeting.
Congress overrode President Roosevelt with a 76 to 19 vote to enact a $2.237 billion soldiers bonus into law. The move ends a 15 year fight, with payment likely next year. Administration faces new tax needs to fund the payout for 3.518 million veterans amid campaign-year politics and budget readjustments.
Corry plans no Presidential Birthday Ball this year but many from the city will travel to Erie for a large party in the Lawrence Hotel ball room Thursday night. John Savko and Cole Unabud faced a close call when toxic gas filled a work area on a Saturday afternoon. Unabud collapsed unconscious and was rushed to Corry Hospital for oxygen treatment, later recovering with only minor aftereffects. Ward Morris accompanied them as the incident continued to unfold.
Washington Jan 27 United Mine Workers leaders prepare for the 34th convention. John L. Lewis stresses a six hour day five day week as the next directive. Union argues a shorter week won’t raise coal prices and will rehiring. Current contracts run into next year with eight hour anthracite and seven to eight hour bituminous pay.
Local Red Cross appeals for warm bedding to comfort those in need. Volunteers are asked to meet Wednesday in the VFW hall to sew quilts from donated items. Ladies should bring thimbles needles and lunch. Coffee sugar and cream provided.
Across London crowds gather at Westminster Hall to see the coffin of King George V on the final day of lying in state. Police report record turnout with subway service extended overnight to handle the rush. Officials note hundreds of thousands have viewed the casket since Friday morning as dignitaries from many nations prepare for the funeral.
Police seek to identify an approximately 85 year old woman whose dismembered body was found in burlap sacks and a basket in an east side alley. Coroner Pearse doubts quick identification. head and one arm were missing. Yesterday a color woman alerted authorities after hearing a dog bark. A man suspected of driving from the alley is to be questioned. The death is believed to have occurred two to five days prior. Nearby a bundle of cotton underwear lay close to the scene.
Harry Auer longtime Corry postmaster and prominent civic leader died at Corry hospital after a two year illness. Born August 4 1867 he was survived by wife Mary Rice two daughters Katharine and Marjorie and siblings Frank and Mrs Ama Dean. He entered insurance in 1891 building a large agency and served on the Board of Education and Rotary Club a charter member, with active ties to Hotel Corry and community projects. Funeral arrangements were pending.
The Standard Fruit Company steamer Amatala was rammed by the oil tanker Damien sixty miles below New Orleans. All passengers and crew were saved. The sister ship Atlantida was sent to assist and would transfer passengers to New Orleans. The Amatala, loaded with coffee and bananas, suffered a hole on the port side.
