General Telephone will spend slightly over $12 million in 1976 on local and long distance switching, buried cable, and new lines across Erie County and parts of Crawford and Warren. W. J. Schilling, Northern Division manager, cited 107,300 area customers as the target and noted 200 miles of cable, with 65 percent buried, replacing 990 poles and thousands of feet of overhead wire. A seven story Erie switching center will house computer controlled equipment to handle many more long distance calls with self checking for reliability. Additional telephones and wiring will be installed to meet growing demand.
