Governor George H. Earle pushes a 1874 constitution rewrite to enable his welfare program. The Republican Senate opposes the Ruth bill, planning to push its own Woodward draft, delaying any new charter until later in 1986. The clash signals a tense bargaining stance between the Democratic governor and GOP leadership in Harrisburg.
The will of Kathryn D Schoch of Dunkirk and formerly of Corry is deemed improperly executed and invalid, per Chautauqua County Judge Ottaway. Surrogate Court refused probate. John J Brandy of Dunkirk named administrator as letters of administration were vested. Waivers of citation listed eight cousins and other relatives among potential heirs.

Two hundred members and families gathered at TO. O. F hall for the 15th anniversary of Jonathan lodge and 2nd of Jonathan's birth of William Wildey founder of the order. Frank T. Babbitt opened with invocation, with musical numbers by a quartet and an accompanist. W. Ed Marsh gave the welcome with Mrs. Gallagher for the Rebekahs, and Marsh spoke as the oldest Jonathan lodge member. Out of town guests included J. F. Deal Franklin Orris Swetland Portland M. Yq Claude Messenger James town and Dr J. G. Selder Union City.
Brooklyn detectives hunted for the eighth participant after seven men died and another remained missing following a party where denatured alcohol was consumed at a municipal emergency shelter dormitory. The event occurred Tuesday night in a hotel dormitory linked to the Department of Public Welfare.
Sub-zero temperatures and a brutal storm struck the eastern United States from Washington to Portland Me. with depths from one to sixteen inches. Temperatures ranged from five below to six below zero at Corty as a biting wind intensified the cold. The storm caused heavy suffering, injuries, and fatalities across cities and towns along the Seaboard.
A 16 inch snowstorm paralyzed New York City and major eastern cities causing business losses in the millions. Rail and air schedules were disrupted as highways and streets became impassable and suburban areas were cut off. Many residents stranded. fatalities and suffering reported.
King Winter grips Pennsylvania with heavy snow from three to 15 inches and dangerous blizzards. Philadelphia records eight deaths from exposure as relief centers flood with requests. Widespread power outages and failed communications disrupt city and suburban life while officials warn totals may rise. The storm adds to a fatal national toll and floods threaten Lower Mississippi River basins as a new blizzard bears down on the coast.
President Roosevelt urged Congress to approve more than 100 billion dollars in public development projects over 20 years. He supported using part of the 4.85 billion work relief fund for conservation tasks and called for a permanent national resources board to annually recommend the most needed projects.
Army and Navy advocates press for a large national defense appropriation. They seek about 1 billion dollars within the work relief fund, plus 80.9 million in the regular 1935 36 budget. Army aims for 405.7 million to expand forces and the Navy for 600 million to 70 million to finish Vinson bill ships. Continued on page four.
In Monessen Pennsylvania on January 24 authorities investigated a gas water heater explosion that killed Edith Mageiaca eight, Mary Vesalo two and Emily Nastasia nine while they played indoors in the Mucciaca basement. Edith's father Gaston Mucciaca forty six was burned. The children sought warmth near the heater when the blast spray scalded them and showered the room.
Flood swollen rivers cause at least 12 deaths and millions in damage across the region. Thousands flee homes with Sledge, Mississippi, refugees fighting over food. Governor Conner orders Major Birdong and Clarkdale National Guard into Sledge area for air and boat relief as tensions escalate.
Walter L. Peake, attorney, spoke at Kiwanis Club anniversary events tracing the history of Kiwanis International and the local club. He noted seven charter members connected to the Corty club, outlined future service goals, and discussed civic impact. Clarence Shoop named to state committee on undernourished children. musical trio from Corty High performed.
Work resumed on the Columbus dam with ten men closing in around the concrete structure and leveling ground. Gilbert Sanford of Youngsville is in charge. Uncertainty remains over relief funds to fully complete the dam, but construction is expected to progress significantly and hopes persist for spring completion.
A coalition of progressive House Democrats and Republicans challenged the administration plan to pay 3,500,000 jobless $50 monthly and push a prevailing union wage into the Work Relief bill. Leaders warned the amendment could derail the administration program, while Dirksen called the $50 wage a starvation wage and labor leaders urged wage schedules equal to private standards.
Harrisburg January 24 A bill to cut Governor Warle's annual salary by 5500 reduce a third of judiciary stipends and trim other state salaries in one of 400-001 proposals before the 1985 legislature Rep Harvey A Surface of Snyder, Republican, sponsors the measure to subject every Commonwealth employee and the 67 counties to wage reductions and eliminate fee payments.
Harrisburg report notes 17 bills before the 1935 legislature seek to ease blue laws in Pennsylvania. Proposals include Friday theater and Sunday entertainment, state supervised horse racing and betting to aid the unemployed aged and blind, and plans to permit bear lead liquor on Sundays, train dogs, and state lotteries. Defense presents Hauptmann in the witness chair denying kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh Jr. He testifies with a Bible vow, claims perfect alibis for key dates, and defense argues witnesses will place the kidnapper on the Lindbergh property.
The New York Shipbuilding Corporation sought Navy support through former Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon in April 1927. C. L. Bardo, ex-president of the firm, testified at the Senate munition inquiry about the appeal and his previously refused immunity waiver. Senator Bennett Champ Clark questioned why Mellon was chosen over the Navy secretary.
The British battle cruisers Hood and Renown suffered minor damage after a collision off the Spanish coast, the Admiralty announced. A separate note reports Union City High School hosting a dance after the TJnion Cate Corry game, inviting students from the school.
