Paris says US paid fines in spy case admission
In a Paris bureau report the Soviet Union claimed the United States admitted guilt by paying $120000 in fines for four American airmen downed near Sungery. The four were seized by Soviet forces on November 19 and freed December 28 after U S fines of $50,000 each were paid to avoid 90 day prison terms imposed by a Hungarian military court. Soviet UN delegate Jacob Malile said the U S recognition of the verdict was an admission of guilt.
