Bitter Trade Fight Looms In Congress Over Reciprocal Pacts
Washington January 22 One of the bitterest fights in the new Congress will be over renewing the reciprocal trade pacts with 26 nations. Secretary Hull seeks three more years to continue the world wide commercial policy aiming at peace, with pacts lowering tariffs and sharing preferences under the most favored nation principle. Opponents cite dairy, copper, and manganese interests, warning that protectionist pressures may be strongest, while Hull argues that free trade avoids economic conflict that could lead to war.
