Last Japanese Hold on Guadalcanal Slipping, Allied Push Grows
Allied reports say Japan’s grasp on Guadalcanal is failing as forces drop from 15,000 to under 4,000. MacArthur says last organized Japanese resistance on the Papuan peninsula in New Guinea has fallen. Allied fighters cleared Japanese pockets at Sanananda and Gona, with hundreds of Japanese dead counted and more prisoners taken as raids continue. Shipping blows hit Rahal harbor, New Britain, sinking vessels of 24,000 tons, while bases at Lae Selamia and Mating are bombed. All Allied units return to base despite snowstorms and heavy AA fire.

Pennsylvania's vast anthracite industry employing about 87 000 miners and producing millions of tons of coal for the war effort may move to a six day week after government appeals for boosted wartime output. Industry leaders and United Mine Workers spokesmen say a wage dispute could be settled by next Saturday as the Twelve member policy committee meets in Hazleton to discuss the change. DUFF 10 RULE ON COMMISSION APPOINTMENT
In Carnegie Pennsylvania January 25 State Attorney General James H. Duff said he would rule within three weeks on the legality of former Governor Arthur H. James appointment of A J Hanes to the State Game Commission. Ross L Leer of McKeesport asked for the ruling as commission chairman. Driver in Spartansburg sled wreck dies. Mosher family harmed
In a late Friday accident near Spartansburg a truck crushed a sled carrying the Mosher children. Donald Mosher died at the scene. Franklin 8 and Perry 12 later died or remained critically injured at Corry hospital. Rupert Moris, 27, the truck driver, is not charged. Funeral plans for Donald set for Torrey Funeral Home.
