Push Plans For Trash Incinerator In Erie City
Erie city officials press for a $10,000 U S planning grant for a new garbage incinerator despite the existing plant at 12th and Greengarden burning 30 000 tons annually though engineers say 72 000 tons is possible. Engineer Hugh Nelson defended a 200 ton daily rating while Safety Director Michael Cannavino warned the plant’s limits are about 80 000 tons per year or 10 to 12 hours daily due to maintenance and fly ash concerns. Council members questioned whether the grant will be refunded if the plant may never be built and noted the current plant handles some grocery-store waste while burning wood caused overheating prior to shutdowns.
