House Ballot On Sales Tax Issue Due Tomorrow
The Democratic controlled House took up a 3 percent sales tax today but chances of passage dim unless Republicans and Democrats compromise. Leader said any overall agreement must be reached on the floor not behind closed doors. The GOP backed bill, introduced at 2 percent with exemptions, faced opposition from Democratic leadership which would accept 2 percent if a 2 percent personal income tax was included. Calls for a 60-50 shared tax program surfaced though Senate Republicans rejected it last week.
