Truck Plunges Into French Creek After Runaway Descent
Dale Fickes a 27-year-old Warren man driving a 1951 Chevrolet tractor and a McCullough Transfer Co. trailer lost brakes on a Fifteenth Street hill in Franklin. The loaded rig sped toward Route 86 and plunged 50 feet into French Creek, ending on snow between the embankment and railroad tracks. Fickes jumped clear, suffered a minor leg cut and sprained wrist, and was treated at Franklin Hospital before release. Local teen Paul Peterson, wearing only pants and slippers, aided the driver then collapsed from exhaustion after carrying him to a nearby home. A Franklin police cruiser arrived shortly after the crash. The driver, who said he had never driven the route before, attributed brake failure to a downshift mishap and an engine failure as the truck approached the city.
