The city launches its first meter maid, Mrs Ronald Barstow, to enforce the new parking meter system. Drivers are warned two headed meters can confuse, and they must locate the meter to avoid tickets. Officers will tighten enforcement, catching overtime violations quickly as space is reallocated.
In Louisville’s tobacco market two wholesale firms report slight cigarette declines after the U.S. Surgeon General’s health findings. They note a marked rise in orders for pipes tobacco pouches cigars and pipe tobacco, while cigars are deemed less hazardous than cigarettes.
Houston Post quotes Rep. Henry Gonzalez saying a thinly veiled threat was made against him and 19 Democratic congressmen in a publication. He asked Adv. Gen. Kennedy to investigate a group named the Minutemen, noting a March 15 1963 edition listing the 20 lawmakers with in memoriam border.
Michael Rockefeller, missing since 1961 in New Guinea, left no will, and a surrogate court action seeks to declare him dead. Gov Nelson Rockefeller and Mary Clark Rockefeller filed to appoint John Lockwood as administrator, noting an estate worth 660000 for the 23 year old.
An IRS statistical report shows tax returns with incomes over 10000 increased 18 percent last year to over 7 million, while more than half of all returns, including singles and families, earned below 5000, a category down 1.8 percent.
In Highland Park New Jersey a 19 year old sailor John V Cheetham killed his mother Tiga 41 and his brothers Douglas 10 and Andrew 6 with a claw hammer during a dispute over money. He told a magistrate I am guilty as he was arraigned. Cheetham a third class petty officer had been away on leave from the Salisbury Sound in San Diego.
President Johnson asks Congress to slash missile and ship procurement by more than a billion dollars and shift spending toward aircraft by 300 million. The Defense Department’s 1965 authorization request totals 10.6 billion for missiles ships and planes, with hearings to begin January 2.
CHEER officials in a noontime meeting yesterday announced plans to form a handicapped workshop and to seek employment opportunities. In Corry the aim is home or plant based manual tasks, not a full shop, to foster self support. William Michael of the State Employment Service spearheads placement efforts, targeting at least one full time job for a member of The Overcomers Club before year end. New pins for Overcomers members were unveiled for a February anniversary event.
Walter Ross streets commissioner, driving the department pickup, slid on an icy West Smith Street stretch and rear-ended Carl Pirro’s car at North Center. Pirro, 23, reported the mishap at the police station. Damaged rear of Pirro’s car estimated at 75 dollars. no truck damage estimate given.
State Police at Girard report the arrest of Garland W. Boyd and Donald H. Boyd, brothers, on two counts of burglary for stealing two calves from A. D. Straka in Edinboro. Garland admits killing a calf December 28 and another January 13. 30 pounds of meat were found at Garland’s Erie home. The victims valued the calves at about $200.
Italian professor Andrea Finocchiaro Aprile, age 95, who led a postwar push for an independent Sicily, died yesterday in Palermo. He was a prominent figure in regional politics and anti fascist activities.
The United States turns back civilian control of the Panama Canal Zone to its civilian governor as U S Panamanian tensions flare after a day of shifting diplomacy. Gov Fleming hands authority to Army Gen O Meara amid rioting and casualties while Chiari demands a new treaty and a Panamanian voice in canal operations. The five nation peace commission mediated agreement calls for renewed talks within 30 days.
Six GOP senators unveiled a two part health program for seniors. It would fund 45 days hospital care and up to 180 days skilled nursing or over 200 days home health care for those nine and older, financed by a two to one percent Social Security tax increase into four health funds. A federally chartered private insurance pool would offer a standard policy at about two dollars weekly, aiming to pool risk.
In Chicago AP reports James R. Hoffa announces a three year national labor agreement for over 400,000 Teamsters and 400 locals ending a potential strike. Wages rise 2.5 cents overall with 10 8 10 per year pattern and fringe benefits totaling 45 cents per hour. Negotiations, led by C G Zwingle, conclude after a tense bargaining period.
Michaelangelo's Pieta will be insured for at least $10 million and boxed in three crates for its 4000 mile voyage to the New York World’s Fair. The first two crates are wooden with a steel final crate, forming a triple casing to absorb shock and protect the Mary figure cradle pose.
At a noontime Phoenix Hotel meeting the Corry Parking Authority discussed a possible downtown redevelopment with federal funds. City engineer David Johnson provided the contact for Accelerated Public Works and the Housing and Home Finance Agency, and the Authority will start its investigation immediately.
Freshman Rep James D. Weaver announced re-election plans for the 24th district comprising Erie Crawford and Mercer counties. An Erie physician informed Erie County Republican Chairman Neal Coughlin of Weaver's decision, citing his space and science committee work and goal to boost Northwestern Pennsylvania's economy through improved labor, industry and farming collaboration.
