In Harrisburg lawmakers moved to speed up the Korean War bonus, wiring the machinery to start in March. Rep Stephen McCann said a bureau would process applications, set amounts and eligibility, with funds raised to pay the approx 60 million to 160 million dollar program. About 330,000 Pennsylvanians may qualify and a deficiency bill for about 18 million was planned for next week. The House also planned to tackle two contested elections and name a committee to handle them.
David K. Sandahl, 20, recently discharged from a mental hospital, told police he killed his parents to end being made to practice the accordion. He was booked on two counts of murder after admitting shooting them with a .22 revolver. His father Ewald L. Sandahl, 52, a rocket plant engineer, and mother Elizabeth Mae, 56, were found after a traffic mishap tied to the suspect. Police traced the car to the Sandahl residence. Continued on page eight.
State Police report a two-vehicle collision on West Washington street about 8:46 yesterday morning. Leo Grumblatt, 37, driving east, slid into a snow bank after hitting a patch. Frank Fastman, 27, of Corry, failed to stop due to slick conditions and rammed Grumblatt’s car causing about $150 damage. Grumblatt’s car sustained front-end damage. Fastman’s truck was undamaged.
Gean dra Lou Keller, 18, of Franklin Pa., remained in serious condition at Hahnemann Hospital after surgery to repair a congenital heart ailment. Doctors said she did not withstand the procedure well and received multiple blood transfusions to supply platelets. she clotted early Wednesday.
Fidel Castro warned at a Havana Rotary Club that U S Marines could trigger a death toll of 200000 among Cuban citizens. He asserted United States policy would intervene in Cuban affairs and called for resistance while noting U S officials denied plans for a large Marine landing.
The western Pennsylvania rackets inquiry paused as U S attorney and racket squad gather more information. Over seven days more than 60 witnesses from Erie Allegheny Cambria Westmoreland and Fayette counties testified. No indictments were handed down yet though 43 people faced non probe related charges. A prior Pittsburgh holdup case saw five indicted including Charles Creedon Stanley Randall Joseph Riley and others from New York and Pittsburgh. Elmer Buffy and Harold Householder were named in separate bank robbery indictments.
Charity Davis marks her 117th birthday at San Joaquin Valley Hospital where she has resided since September 1, 1919. She never married and has no known close relatives, remaining the oldest resident in the facility.
