Pittsburgh Waste Strike Eases After Court Order Returns Workers

Pittsburgh nonuniformed workers, including garbagemen and mechanics, began returning to work under a court order from Allegheny County Judge Loran L. Lewis, ending a 10 day garbage strike that prompted a health emergency. The order requires both sides to start collective bargaining and aims to clear 5,000 tons of accumulated trash within about 10 days. Mayor Flaherty said wage cuts will stand and stressed the dispute was more than a labor matter, citing violence and property damage during the walkout.
