Smoking Moms May Not Really Harm Their Unborn Children
Los Angeles AP reports UC Berkeley researcher Dr. Jacob Yerushalmy analyzed 5 077 women and 8 671 births, suggesting smoking may not harm fetus as strongly as prior studies indicated. He notes results are tentative, urging larger samples and more variables, with findings showing similar low birthweight in continuous smokers and never smokers who later smoked. He also cites cases of quitters producing fewer low weight babies, challenging the idea that smoking itself exerts external fetal damage.
