10000 More Pa. Workers Jobs May Be Protected
Harrisburg January 10 Commonwealth officials estimate that 25000 state employees two thirds of the payroll would be under civil service if five more departments are brought under the merit system. Governor James seeks to extend competitive exams administered by two civil service boards to the State Motor Police Health and Welfare Departments and Fish and Game Commissions. This would add nearly 10000 workers to civil service and lift the total salaried workforce under civil service to about 25182, with a September 30 1939 grand total of 36191 including Social Security Board staff.
