Several Corryites are among Erie County residents called for jury service at the February term of criminal court which convenes Monday February 10. Traverse jurors include Mrs Grace Volk and Henry M Crittenden among others. The murder defendant is Harold Patterson charged with the slaying of Jet Puchinski. Rep. DA Burton R Laub will announce the full list of casts later this month. Also Harry Hopkins, Roosevelt’s envoy to Britain, left Lisbon for London aboard a British Airways seaplane delayed by weather.
A tentative bill to authorize broad lending of ships tanks guns and planes to Great Britain and other democracies was drafted and may reach Congress. Officials say it is new legislation not tied to the Neutrality or Pittman laws with costs uncertain, and funding would be provided as needed, with Britain paying cash for orders.
Mass production facilities of Ford Motor Company are under development with Consolidated Aircraft to build four motor bombers. Chicago January 9 medical authorities hailed the accidental discovery of a new influenza vaccine as one of the most promising practical advances in recent decades. The Journal of the American Medical Association highlighted the vaccine, noting it offers radically new ideas about immunity and combating disease.
Howard C. Hopson, builder of a massive utility empire, was sentenced to five years on each of 17 counts of wall fraud. Seven young men from the Brie county district will report for camp under the 1940 selective service act. They were chosen by Local Board No 2 in Union City and announced January 28. Names include Hyderick Roly Bact, Charles Huntington Carter, Fendi Joseph Wave, Michael Fal Keer, Edwin Oscar Iitelinger, Reuben Lavern Jewell, Rovooe Salyrit. The men will undergo medical examinations in Erie county before dispatch to Pittsburgh for further processing.
