Washington officials weigh declaring the petroleum industry a public utility to curb overproduction after a Supreme Court ruling struck down key provisions of the National Industrial Recovery Act. Harrisburg Pa Jan 8 The public service commission and S Davis Wilson Philadelphia city controller have buried the hatchet ending a dispute that began in a rate case hearing in Philadelphia where Wilson alleged the commission favored utilities.
New Dealers forecast that Roosevelt’s 4 billion recovery and relief program will create useful employment for at least 7 million people this year. The plan aims to shift 18.5 million from dole to public works and privately reemploy 3.5 million. Officials warn about funding 1.5 million dole cuts and note uncertainty over jobless relief. April 1 marks federal public works start. projects include slum clearance and rural electrification. Governor-elect George H. Earle will address the Pennsylvania farm show January 21 with Agriculture Secretary J. Hansell French speaking that evening.
Authorities in Allegheny County plan an inquest Thursday in Pittsburgh into the yuletide mass slaying that killed three families. Mrs Clara Dempsey, lone survivor and widow of Walter Dempsey, remains in Presbyterian hospital with gunshot wounds and will be the sole witness. Deputy Coroner John Artz will supervise the session as Mrs Dempsey reads her statement via court stenographer.
Henry L Harriman, president of the U S Chamber of Commerce, urged members to oppose paying the soldiers' bonus now. He warned a new bonus would cost nearly 1.5 billion dollars and require cash payment for certificates far before maturity. He noted the chamber supports President Roosevelt's stance against the bonus.
In Mexico City students and red shirts clashed after a religious war outbreak. At least five students were shot as 5000 demonstrators attacked the red shirt headquarters and denounced the government. Garrido Canadal, a cabinet member, heads the red shirts.
The planned vocational school at the Hatch building site on East Congress Street near Wright is expected to receive final approval from the Relief Works Division. Corry School District submitted plans weeks ago, but final authorization stalled, with work anticipated to begin within the next few weeks.
Washington Jan 8 The House launched its first investigation of the 74th Congress approving a proposal to inquire into real estate bondholders protective committees amid rising concerns over securitization and conflicts of interest in property financing.
President Roosevelt remained in the White House study with a slight head cold for a second day yet continued his routine. He started work at his desk in the oval room as Stephen W. Early said he might attend the cabinet and executive council meeting in the afternoon.
In Washington on January 8, Rep. J. A. Martin leads a new silver forces group in the House, aiming to organize a broad pro silver remonetization bloc beyond party lines. The second relief administration report, covering Sept 1 1982 to Aug 31 1984, criticizes categorical relief such as mothers' assistance and pensions for the blind for lack of balance.
Joseph Perrone testified Hauptmann delivered the ransom note for J J Lindbergh baby. Mandua Bitas Hochmuth, 87, of Hopewell, identified Hauptmann as a man seen near the Lindbergh kidnapping scene, describing him with a green car and a ladder, amid dramatic courtroom pointing.
Anthony Drexel Biddle Philadelphia socialite was mentioned by Postmaster General Parley as a possible American minister to the Irish Free State. Farrel noted Biddle's name had been proposed and was under consideration.
