Flatley Loses Ground in Patronage Tug of War

Erie June 4 Democratic Commissioner Thomas Fianley failed to win reappointment to any county committee chairmanship at the annual reorganization. Four of six Democratic county employees received permanent posts while two were renewed only temporarily, keeping the threat of dismissal. GOP commissioners Dell Darling and Fred Lamberton blocked motions to reappoint two veterans, ending Flatley’s bid and reshaping county patronage.

Finland Faces Wage Rise Clash Amid Cabinet Instability

In Helsinki on January 4 the Social Democratic government under Premier Karl August Fagerholm confronts a 3 percent general wage increase demand from a trade union federation. A special session of parliament is set for January 10 as Rightist parties back the union, risking Fagerholm’s leadership and possibly triggering a caretaker cabinet if defeated before the February 18 presidential election. The note adds a sideline about the U.S. Bureau of Mines studying coal washing since 1910.
