President Nixon signed 66 bills in a record year end act, including a $2.9 billion housing measure to aid blighted urban areas and poor housing, a new crime insurance program for high risk cities, and urban growth policy. Other laws extend auto exhaust limits, preserve tax rates, fund interstate highway construction through 1976, and allocate foreign aid including arms sales.
Police from Conneaut Union City and State Police arrested 19 year old Larry Lyle Leech at a Union City home in connection with the Conneaut Ohio kidnapping of Carolyn Leech 19. The elder brother Gary Lee Leech 25 remains at large with warrants for unlawful flight to avoid confinement and FBI involvement. Earlier two Erie residents Albert Ainley 28 and Cathy Swanson 17 were jailed Monday night.
The nation records 189 traffic deaths during the New Year weekend as authorities report light snow in northern and central frockles and clearer highways elsewhere. The count began at 6 p.m. Thursday and ends at midnight Sunday.
State Police reported a pony killed and a car damaged after a collision two miles south of Route 77 on Oil Creek road at 1 a.m. A Southbound car driven by Ronald A. Eastman struck the pony, which Owner Edward Steffens asked trooper Martin Kaschalk to shoot due to serious injury. Eastman reported seeing the animal and attempting to pass, but the pony bolted into the road. Damages totaled about $500 with no injuries to Eastman. In a separate 90 minute span at Route 69 and Nancy Hill Road, J Darrow, 23, and Philip M. Stuteman, 19, left the scene after each car slid into a ditch following a stop-sign violation and loss of control, with damages estimated at $76 and $50 respectively.
State Senator R Budd Dwyer of Meadville said he will attend the Corry Evening Journal Second Annual Appreciation Dinner next Thursday. He will be joined by Assemblyman Forest Hopkins and Congressman Joseph Vigorito to preview state and federal developments. The State Health Dept reinstates a landfill permit for Penn Disposal Inc in Erie, amid a Wayne Township zoning dispute and court case slated for early this year.
The Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board approved the local PSEA as the bargaining agency for Corry Area School Jointure teachers. Negotiators will meet next week to commence talks seen as a short series, while four principal-teachers are excluded from the unit and classified as supervisors. The panel also ruled on supervisory status and set a 21 day period to finalize the new officials believe the talks will be brief.
Cambridge Springs snowmobile rider Richard Maraszak, 23, remains in critical condition after his craft crashed into a barbed wire fence near Union City. A second rider fled the scene. police seek the hit-run operator. Maraszak underwent about five hours of facial and fracture surgery at St Vincent Hospital Erie. Local complaints about snowmobile driving and weekly editor letters reflect ongoing community concern.
Firefighters battled a house fire in Spring Creek last night near the fire barn. Corry volunteers responded with a pumper and emergency truck, returning at 10 55 p m after the blaze was brought under control. Corry Ambulance Service also assisted.
