Valley Forge Freighter Breaks Up on Reefs Near Singapore
The American freighter Valley Forge with 37 crew broke up after grounding on reefs 50 miles south of Singapore. At least 26 crew were rescued by British Navy, with others spotted by a rescue plane. A Royal Navy vessel and a Royal Air Force plane aided survivors on nearby islands near Bintan in the Indonesian archipelago. The 1943 Liberty ship, owned by Pepen Navigation Co, was en route to Singapore carrying 10,000 tons of wheat.
