Ohio river flood drives 30,000 from homes in Portsmouth and upstream towns. Damage could reach 3.5 million dollars. Army engineers fill 20,000 sandbags as towns along the river brace for crest near eight feet over flood stage. Several rail workers killed in a collision near New Philadelphia. Communities across Ohio and Kentucky endure widespread inundation with hundreds of homes flooded and crops at risk.
State police arrested two local youths, William W. Lemar and Arthur McDonald, linked to the theft of a dozen rabbits from Mrs. Bignette Bemis. Lemar pleaded guilty to larceny before Justice Perry Mead and was remanded for the next Warren County juvenile court term. McDonald is in juvenile probation custody for further handling.

After two years of investigations the House Interstate and Foreign Commerce subcommittee warns crude demand exceeds production and supplies fall, urging government action to boost output and exploration.
National tally shows a drop in holiday fatalities from New Year’s, with 115 deaths from various causes and a large share from automobile accidents. Pennsylvania reports lower totals. overall violent deaths number 268 in January 2, 1842 period, autos causing 171. The extended 1942 Christmas Weekend yielded 250 traffic fatalities.

A spokesman says negotiations for unification are ongoing and that some Vichy holdovers may stay if they proved loyal in wartime. Giraud orders releases of detainees based on wartime records and patriotism, not ideology.
Philadelphia January 2 rationing relaxes controls on coal stove sales. The regional Office of Price Administration says buyers who use a coal stove to replace an oil heater are eligible for a purchase certificate. Director R F Ashenfelter comments.
Moscow reports that German defenses in central positions near the Kalmyk region collapsed as Adolf Hitler acknowledged evacuation of Elista, Kalmyk capital, after the fortifications fell. Soviet dispatches claim Velikie Luki was nearly surrounded and that fall of the citadel opened major German transport routes toward the Black Sea.
Three railroad workers credit an engineer A L Snyder of Canton Ohio with saving two fellow crewmen from a head on collision. Snyder died in the crash while attempting to avert disaster on the double header freight run near New Philadelphia.
