Suicide Ends Life of Mohawk Valley Business Executive
Samuel D Earl, 46, president of Standard Furniture Co. in Herkimer, shot himself at home in Old Forge last Friday. He had sought buyers for the company as finances faltered and the firm could not pay 230 employees. The board later said working capital came mainly from an insurance policy, allowing continued operations. Residents had previously donated about 125000 in ash and pledged 75000 more in exchange for 100 company bonds, with funds placed in trust pending the factory's status. No suicide note was found.
