Fire damages M J McIntyre interior decorating store

A flash blaze at 21 South Center Street caused about five to six thousand dollars in damage to the M J McIntyre interior decorating store. Paint fumes allegedly sparked the fire which also threatened the old St James Hotel. Firefighters from No 1 station contained the blaze quickly with minimal water use. Occupants of upper floors evacuated to the Rex Theatre as repairs and redecorating are planned.

Oscar Levant In Death by Own Action Attempt

Beverly Hills police rushed to pianist Oscar Levant home after he told a telephone operator he would be dead within 30 minutes. Levant, 47, was found in bed and transported to a hospital where his stomach was pumped. investigators noted formaldehyde odor and Levy stated he had taken two teaspoons of it. Authorities say he is in an extremely nervous condition and his wife recently left with the children. The report also notes a separate item about a water rate hike in Johnstown affecting about 24 000 customers.

Kiwanis Collects 14 Old Iceboxes in Safety Drive

The Kiwanis Club announced Operation Teebox a success as 14 old iceboxes were gathered yesterday and sent to the city dump. Leo Al chair thanked volunteers and noted the danger after 390 children suffocated in discarded boxes last summer in the United Sites. The group credited local businesses Root Appliance Roberts Refrigerator Merrith Appliance and Niederriter Co for aiding the effort.

Morals Case Continued in Erie Court

The case against Jock Vanik of Worth Street was continued for two weeks after a hearing before Alderman M. S. Cobbett. The rape charge was changed to incest adultery to fit technicalities. additional charges of nonpayment and surety of the peace were added. Vanik pleaded guilty to the latter two. innocent to the morale count. The alderman postponed action to allow legal review, remanding Vanik to Erie County Jail. The closed two hour hearing addressed technical legal points.

Youths Held After Wild Auto Chase Between Ripley and North East

Two 16 year olds are in custody after a high speed chase on Route 20 between Ripley and North East. Russell Bemis of Corry on parole from George Junior Republic faces a Jamestown court hearing. the other youth from Spring Creek is with Warren County juvenile authorities. Large NYC Stock Block Tied to Immense Oil Ties

Clinton Murfison and Sid W. Richardson purchased 800000 shares of New York Central stock from the Chesapeakes and Ohio led group, about 12 percent of the outstanding shares, as part of a proxy battle. Corryite to plead in Warren County Court

Gale Davis 26 of Ad. 3 Corry and Corryite suspect will plead guilty to burglary and larceny in Warren County Court tomorrow before Judge Alexander. Davis previously pleaded guilty before Justice Greenland and wants a similar plea in court. A detainer was filed in December linking him to a Warren break in on Mead Avenue. Davis admitted to being the panty burglar stealing garments from clotheslines and later pleaded guilty in Erie County court before release after serving months of a sentence.

Dulles Defends Berlin Visit Amid World Opinion Effort

Secretary Dulles told a nationwide radio television audience that Berlin trip was worthwhile and would influence future events.
