Rehearsals this week for the musical comedy Men Wanted to be staged at the Senior High auditorium on Thursday and Friday evenings, under the Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Meadville area residents Mr and Mrs Seward Park escaped serious injuries when their car skidded from Roosevelt Highway near Spenzer's Corners two miles west of the city. A Brooklyn veteran allegedly offered to take Bruno Hauptmann’s place in the electric chair for six thousand dollars. Stanley Prystup, a CWA worker, claimed the funds would aid his 14 year old son and 12 year old daughter amid relief cuts. Governor Hoffman said the scheme is not permissible under New Jersey law.

United Press reports H M Johnson testified before the federal board of tax appeals that Andrew W Mellon had about 87.7 million dollars of securities invested in Loxsfree assets not disclosed on income tax returns. Johnson said some exempt securities were listed as taxable and Mellon still supervised policy while secretary of the treasury and ambassador to Britain.
A sharp temperature drop was predicted in western Pennsylvania by nightfall easing flood fears on major rivers. Indian summer melted snow in Pittsburgh as a weather expert warned the middle west storm would not hit the city though temperatures could fall from near 60 degrees. In Greensburg, 85 year old Miss Bell J. Armstrong died after her nightgown caught fire from an open gas stove in her bathroom.

Emergency education classes restarted today in Pennsylvania as 8,084 teachers resumed instruction for unemployed workers and adults. Federal relief funds totaling 5,607,600 arrived last week with 600,000 earmarked for emergency education, boosting February relief totals to 20,619,600. Courses cover art English citizenship handwriting music recreation social science and vocational guidance for about 149,000 participants over age 16. The program began 18 months ago and is funded entirely by the federal government.
In a February blast at the port of Africa five people died aboard the French liner Gouverneur General Jan nat while a box of explosives exploded in the hold as the ship unloaded. Several others were injured and authorities placed the wharves under guard. The 4,913 ton vessel is owned by the French government’s commerce marine service.
Harrisburg Pa Feb 2 United Frees reports Governor Barle will seek a statewide referendum on preserving or replacing the state liquor store system. He plans a Septem ber primary vote to allow voters to decide whether to retain the liquor control board and system. If the board runs efficiently they may stay. if not, merchants with liquor-experience could take over. A future referendum on abolishing the system could follow.
Raymond Hamilton once Southwest’s most wanted man eluded officers in a two state pursuit from Celina to near McKinney. Wounded in the jaw he rode with hostages Muddy roads hampered both fugitives and pursuers as they moved toward Denton while an elder farmer and others watched in fear.
Rodney Curry of Pittsburgh arrives to assume management at Hotel Curry as the previous manager Lannan steps down on the 20th. Curry previously served at Wellsle House in Pittsburgh and will oversee local operations while Lannan seeks a new post in the region.
