Congress plans to send President Johnson an 11.5 billion tax cut bill this week as civil rights fights loom in the Senate. Senate leaders aim to bring up the measure after a planned cotton wheat bill debate, with a filibuster expected from Southern opponents. The package includes the largest tax reductions in history and could boost take home pay starting in mid March.
A North Lebanon Township family led by James N. Snavely with ACLU support filed a federal suit to stop permissive Bible reading in Cornwall Lebanon Suburban Joint Schools. Percie L. McCray of 617 West Henanstent died instantly when his car was struck at the Gates street crossing by a westbound Erie Luckywanna Railroad freight train traveling 35 to 40 mph. Engineer William D. Thompson Jr. said McCray appeared to hesitate and may not have seen the locomotive. The wreck left the car impaled on the engine and required a lengthy untangling before removal. Corry police and deputy coroner officials attended the scene as traffic and church services nearby were disrupted.
The Out-of-Town division led by Frank Dodd drives the annual YMCA membership drive in Corry. The team, captained by Mrs. Charles Post, shows 59 points with 179 new and renewal members signed toward a 550 goal. Top individuals include Mrs. Claire Hillstrom Donald Chase Evellyn Stroupasse and Frank Sturgis. team majors are Allen Kuhn Frank Dodd and Frank Sturgis. Breakfast was provided by the YMCA ladies auxiliary.
The Communicable Disease Center reports 111 hepatitis cases traced to consumption of raw oysters in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The outbreak began in October and ended by late January, with adults making up 104 cases. Pennsylvania accounts for 56 cases, New Jersey 53, and two NYC area cases were found in Pleasantville, New Jersey. The peak occurred mid November and again in early January.
CHEER's first year shows wide community aid without a fund drive, aided by amateur volunteers.
