Some 7,000 Mack Truck employees in five states will vote Sunday March 2 on a three year contract after more than five months of negotiation. Ballots will be cast by 2,700 office and shop workers of UAW Locals 1247 and 171 in the Hagerstown plant plus members in Cortland New York Hayward California Bridgewater New Jersey and Allentown Pennsylvania. If approved it will be the first Mack UAW contract settled without a strike in 20 years. Tentative settlement was reached about 40 hours before a strike deadline.
Washington AP reports the Defense Department directs the April draft of 48,000 men, the largest monthly call in nearly two decades. About 4,000 will join the Marines, marking the first Marine conscription draw in about two years, while 44,000 will enter the Army.
